Ocarina – Bamboo

The Ocarina is an ancient wind instrument with an absorbing quality through the specific pattern of resonance. It is one of the oldest musical instruments on Earth, believed to date back some 12,000 years, and was found in many parts of the world. Ocarina-type instruments have been of particular importance in Chinese and Mesoamerican cultures, where they are often shaped like animals, mainly birds. Although many other materials may also be utilized for these vessel flutes including plastic, wood, glass, and metal, the ocarina is generally crafted from ceramic. At SVARAM, we use a special clay mixture for good tonal quality. An ideal instrument to learn to play music for oneself, but also to enter the practice of circular breathing. The tone is produced through the sound hole and can be varied by changing the strength of blowing. Tabulators are included to show the basic fingering, and one is surprised to be able to play a full range of notes from just the four finger holes.
